You may be thinking that ear pain is only common for kids, but that is not true. Even though ear infections are common for children, adults get them as well. So, if you somehow have it and want to treat it, there are several ways you can try without using medication.

That is right.

There are treatments you can try at the comfort of your home that can be cheap and effective. Even though the pain tends to sometimes go away on its own, it can take a while. Therefore, you should try to speed up the healing process and help your ear get better.

Causes of Ear Infection

There could be two major causes of ear pain. The first one is called the swimmer’s ear, and the second one appears due to a bacteria inside the ear. As a result, the infections can be related to allergy or a respiratory infection.

In other words, the infection can be either bacterial or viral.

5 Treatments for Ear Pain

When it comes to children who have an ear infection, the medical practitioners have to wait 72 hours before they give them any medication. Therefore, the parents usually have to rely on treatments that they can use at home.

Luckily, the ear pain is neither contagious nor dangerous. However, they can affect the ability to hear. Thus, you should try these following treatments if you want to solve this problem.

1. Cold or Warm Compress

Ear pain is the same as any other pain. So, you can use an ice pack or a heating pad to relieve the pain. Plus, it is both safe and effective. All you have to do is compress the spot with either cold or warm packs and hold them for a few minutes.

2. Tea Tree Oil

If you want a potent oil that has anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antiseptic properties, you should use tea tree oil. For more sensitive ears, mix it with a bit of olive oil and apply a few drops directly inside the ear.

In the end, you might be able to decrease the discomfort and the pain you feel in the ear.

3. Garlic Oil

Garlic is a powerful food that is very beneficial for the body and the overall health. But, that is not all. This food can also heal the ear pain because of its antiviral properties. However, you can’t use it for treating an ear infection, only the pain.

To use it, apply a few drops of warm garlic oil in the ear daily.

4. Olive Oil

Even though there is no scientific evidence that supports this claim, the American Academy of Pediatrics believes that olive oil can be useful for relieving the ear pain. Therefore, you can apply a few drops of this warm oil and wait for the pain to pass.

5. Ginger

As a potent anti-inflammatory ingredient, ginger can help relieve the ear pain. So, to use it, you will have to use some warm ginger juice around the canal. However, be careful not to use it inside the ear canal.

If you don’t have ginger juice, you can replace it with strained oil with ginger.

When to Visit the Doctor for a Surgery?

If the ear pain or an infection doesn’t go away and you experience the pain repeatedly, this means that you should visit the doctor. The medical practitioner will put you under general anesthetic and puncture the eardrums to insert small grommets.

In addition, the doctor will be able to drain all the excess fluid in your ear and remove the cause of the frequent infections. Even though this surgery might seem painful and scary, the anesthetic will help.
