Fibromyalgia can present differently in different people, but most who suffer from the condition experience chronic muscle pain, trigger points (tender points), and chronic fatigue. Many can also suffer from symptoms like insomnia, headaches, digestive problems, and anxiety. (1)

Since there is no known cure for fibromyalgia, healthcare providers focus on helping people manage their symptoms to reduce the impact on their quality of life. Luckily, a simple home remedy can help tackle a number of the symptoms of fibromyalgia at once, and it’s actually quite fun to make: scented CBD bath bombs.

Can CBD Help with Fibromyalgia?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is derived from the hemp plant. Unlike THC, it does not produce any psychoactive effects, however, there is strong evidence for a number of health benefits.

Laura M. Borgelt, Kari Lanette Franson, and Abraham M. Nussbaum studied the effects of medical cannabis and published their findings in 2013.

They noted that one of the most popular medical uses for cannabis is for pain relief and that there’s scientific evidence that results in “significant improvement” for a wide variety of pain and muscle aches. This, of course, is great news for people suffering from fibromyalgia. (2)

Additionally, preliminary research suggests CBD’s benefits may include: (3)

  • reducing inflammation
  • treating epilepsy
  • relieving anxiety
  • treating acne
  • slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease
  • helping to prevent cancer
  • reducing nicotine cravings

How to Buy Quality CBD Oil

Industrial grade hemp has THC levels of 0.3% or less and is not a regulated substance in the United States. Products with THC levels over that threshold, however, are only permitted in states where recreational marijuana is legal and states where medical THC and CBD are legal. As of October 2018, cannabis use is legal across Canada.

We highly recommend doing some research before purchasing a CBD product. Consumer Reports advises purchasing CBD oil from within the country, where products are closely regulated and standardized. (4) You should also check the certificate of analysis (COA), which lists the CBD and THC content as well as test results for any contaminants. If the COA mentions meeting ISO 17025 standards, all the better! Note that companies selling “hemp oil” rather than “CBD oil” generally contain lower amounts cannabidiol, and won’t be as effective.
